Long Range Management Plan
The Minnesota DNR has finalized its
Long Range Management Plan for
Muskies and Northern Pike through 2020. A lot of time and effort was
put into this by a lot of people. This is a very well laid out plan
that sets the ground work for the future of our fisheries.
Minnesota Muskie Alliance (MMA)
Here's a copy of the
newsletter (5/1/08) from the most recent MMA meeting. Also from
that meeting is a summary of the
Muskie Production Meeting. This covers a stocking summary for
the state from 2007 as well as a look ahead to what will be
happening in 2008.
Kids Fishing Clinic
On May 31st, 2008, there will be a
Kids Fishing Clinic at Lum Park in Brainerd. The Brainerd Lakes
Chapter is proud to be a sponsor of this great event. We will be on
hand with a station to provide muskie information and to help young
kids gain an interest in fishing. This event is free for kids from 5
to 16 years old. There will be some exciting surprises for some very
lucky kids at the end of this event!
Fish Community Responses to the Introduction of Muskellunge in
Minnesota Lakes
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has completed a study
titled
Fish Community Responses to the Introduction of Muskellunge in
Minnesota Lakes
that shows how different fish species were effected in 41 different
Minnesota lakes before and after muskellunge were stocked. This is a
very educational piece on what kind of effects muskies can have on
other species.
Muskie Angler Survey
A very interesting Muskie Angler
Survey was recently taken during the 2006 fishing season. This
survey reveals a number of interesting facts about the thoughts and
beliefs of both muskie anglers and non-muskie anglers about muskies
and muskie fishing.
2008 Brainerd Lakes Chapter Banquet
The Brainerd Lakes Chapter held its annual banquet on February
9th, 2008. We would like to thank everyone for the generous
donations. This year's banquet
was a huge success and it would not have been possible if not for
all of you. Pictures from the 2008 BLC Banquet can be found
here.
Upper Mississippi Gets More Muskies

The BLC was contacted at the beginning of November about
purchasing muskies for stocking purposes. We had to make a very
quick decision and as of Tuesday, November 6th, some 80 12" to 16"
muskies were deposited into the Upper Mississippi River near French
Rapids.
Over the past year or so, the Upper Mississippi from the Potlach
Dam to Aitkin has received an estimated 2,500 to 2,800 12" to 24"
muskies and 100,000 muskie fry, courtesy of the BLC and the DNR.
Most of the muskies were released in the French Rapids area. It
shows the commitment that the BLC and the DNR have to improving the
muskie fishery in the Brainerd Lakes area.
2008 Gil Hamm Chapter Challunge
The 2008 Gil Hamm Chapter Challunge will be held
from September 24th to the 26th and will be headquartered out of
Break on the Lake Resort on Cass Lake. Check out all the details
here.
Muskellunge Education
A very educational brochure titled
What Do Muskies Really Eat? is available for distribution to
anyone and everyone. Fellow Muskies, Inc. member Brad Waldera of the
Fargo-Moorhead Chapter put this brochure together to help educate
the public on the many misconceptions that are out there regarding
muskies and how they affect our fisheries.
